Season of the Fast of the Catechumens Begins on February 10

The Fast of the Catechumens was established by St. Gregory the Illuminator. Upon his release from Khor Virap, he urged King Trdat (Tiridates III), the Armenian nobility and the entire people to repent and fast for five days before receiving baptism. This is the First Fast of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The forty-day fasts of the Nativity and the Transfiguration have been divided into parts and distributed throughout the year. The weekly fast usually lasts five days, from Monday to Friday, preceding major feasts and various commemorations.
