It was built in 1750 during the reign of Catholicos Gazar I of Jahuk. It was rebuilt and renovated during the reign of the following Catholicoses. It was renovated in 1974.
In 2001, the second floor of the building, the deacons' residences, where the deacons of the Mother See now live, was completely renovated. The renovation was done with the donation of American-based philanthropists Nazar and Artemis Nazaryans. The "Ruben Sevak" museum operates on the first floor.
