The Vaskenian Theological Seminary of Sevan was founded in 1990 with the blessing of the late Catholicos of All Armenians Vazgen I, and on the initiative of the Vicar of the Araratian Patriarchal Diocese, His Eminence Archbishop Karekin Nersisyan (who in 1999 became Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians).
The school was named Vaskenian Seminary (Dpranots) in honor of Vazgen I, Catholicos of All Armenians.
In 1996, the school had its first graduates. Between 1996 and 2022, through the efforts of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and the benefaction of Mr. and Mrs. Karnig and Anahit Yacoubian, a new residential building and the Chapel of St. Jacob of Nisibis were constructed.
Beginning with the 2003–2004 academic year, studies at the Vazskenian Theological Seminary became a four-year program. After completing it, students continue their two-year master’s studies at the Gevorgian Theological Seminary.
